I did a fair bit of work on the vehicle editor over the Xmas holiday. I am now continuing work, though at a much slower pace. It's unfortunate, but everyday's life can take a lot of time and energy.

Future of Top10

I have been working on Top10 on and off for a long time now. The code base is written in C++, and has uneven quality. C++ in itself is not a very fun programming language to write in. Moreover, supporting two platforms and their build systems is not a very pleasant task. Developing Top10 has become more of a burden than a healthy hobby.

For all these reasons, I believe Top10 has reached a point where a fresh start is needed. I have taken the following decisions:
1. I will switch to a new programming language, F#. This is a multi-paradigm language by Microsoft with a strong inclination towards functional programming.
2. As a consequence of 1, I will switch to a new framework, .NET. There are free implementations available on non-Microsoft platforms, the most famous being Mono. Hopefully, that means I won't be limiting Top10's access to other OSes.
3. I might not actively support the Linux platform any longer, although I will keep Linux in mind and try to isolate OS-dependent pieces in the code. I will be glad to include in the team anyone willing to take on the task of porting and maintaining Top10 on Linux and/or other platforms.

New features:
- Connection points in the junction editor are now picked by aiming at waypoints in the main view, which is a lot more convenient than the older method.
- When adding a control point to a section, the next waypoint is selected, instead of always using the current waypoint in the waypoint editor.
- Can cut a section in two in the track editor.
- Waypoints can be used to control the terrain again.
- The number of triangles generated in sections is controlled by the triangulation parameters. The maximum distance and the minimum distance are ten times smaller as for the sections.

Bug fixes:
- When loading tracks, only the first checkpoint was loaded.
- Crash when cutting sections.

top10-bins-080330.zip (867.49 Kb)

News:
- Change in the way road outlines are smoothed. Existing tracks will probably require to have their smoothness factor increased by a factor of 2. The smoothness value is accessible in the sections edition dialog.
- Added support for forks, i.e. junctions between one road on one side and two roads on the other side.

Bug fixes:
- Corrected a bug affecting banking angles in junctions.

Changes:
- Added support for junctions between two roads in the track editor. Other types of junctions will come soon.
- Added smoothness attribute to the section editor to control the smoothness of the outline.
- Fixed bug causing holes in the ground in the track editor.
- Made the default go-kart heavier, and increased the stickiness of tires. The go-kart now behaves more like a racing vehicle and less like "une savonnette".
