Introduction


This page describes the physical modelling of a gear box and the elements around it.

The system


The system is composed of:
  • the engine axle
  • the gearbox
  • the clutch
  • the axle
  • the the wheels
  • the brakes
  • the ground

The drive train


The wheel, the axle and the engine all have angular velocities.
The engine applies a torque on the axle through the gearbox (when the gearbox is not set on free wheeling).
The clutch applies a torque on the axle when engaged. The angular velocities of the engine and the axle are linked by the ratio of the gearbox. Formally:

T(engine)/R - T(clutch) = (R*I(axle) + I(engine)/R) * accel(engine)

and

accel(axle) = -R*accel(engine)
